Christmas TV

There is great Christmas programming made for TV which aren't Christmas movies that happen to air on television. Whether it be Christmas episodes of your favorite TV shows, Christmas specials, Christmas shows, Christmas made for TV movies, or even Christmas commercials, Christmas programming for TV has added to our enjoyment of the holiday season since television sets first appeared in our living rooms all of those decades ago. Christmas TV is a shared experience - you know other people are watching the same thing you are at the same time.

Christmas Specials and Christmas TV Movies

Many people confuse Christmas specials with Christmas movies. Some are even listed as people's favorite Christmas movies of all time. These are Christmas specials that were made for the small screen to be aired during the holiday season and were never intended to have a theatrical release. Many are created to run in a half hour time slot. Many of the most beloved Christmas specials capture a magic that even their creators couldn't have imagined and make even our normal sized hearts grow a few sizes.

Our List of Christmas Specials and TV Movies

This is our list of Christmas specials. Many of these are the perennials that we have grown up watching at Christmas on TV. The mere image of many of the characters in these specials can stir up nostalgic feelings. Any of the specials written in green have their own page which goes into further depth about the Christmas special, Made-for-TV Christmas movie, or Christmas movie made from a TV show. If you see an iTunes button next to the Christmas special, you can click on it to go directly to iTunes to download it.

Christmas Episodes of TV Shows

Besides season premieres and finales, Christmas episodes of TV shows are often the episodes that many loyal fans look forward to the most; they are special. They usually have great holiday messages of generosity, love and friendship mixed in with an aesthetic quality that gets you in the spirit of Christmas. In addition, Christmas episodes already have all of the characters, setups, plot lines, and humor, romance, or drama that you already love about the TV show, just in the setting and spirit of the most wonderful time of the year!

Our List of Christmas Episodes from TV Shows

This is our list of Christmas episodes from TV shows. There are Christmas episodes of TV shows that have been made that aren't included in this list and we will admit we haven't watched all of the episodes listed below, but we are working on it. Any shows written in green have their own pages that have more information on the TV show and its Christmas episodes; just click on the name of the show to access those pages. Actual Christmas episodes written in green are links to purchase these episodes on iTunes. The iTunes button next to the episodes are also links to purchase those episodes on iTunes. Many of these shows (mostly shows that are not creating new episodes) are not available on iTunes yet. In those cases, along the side columns, we provide links to purchase the DVD of the seasons of those shows that contain the Christmas episodes we mention. This is a reference list of Christmas episodes and not necessarily recommendations. In the future, Ovation for Christmas will add reviews, recommendations and compile our lists of, in our humble opinion, the top Christmas episodes from different genres, time periods and the best overall Christmas episodes.

Christmas Variety Shows

Christmas variety shows have been around for a long time and are actually very rare these days. Most of these were hosted by celebrities and included the celebrity's name right in the title of the special. Some of these shows contain moments that have lived on in Christmas lore for decades: most notably the duet between Bing Crosby and David Bowie of "Peace on Earth / The Little Drummer Boy" performed during Bing Crosby's last Christmas show in 1977. These variety shows contain true Christmas treasures that have been buried by the years and are just waiting to be discovered again.

Our List of Christmas Variety Shows

This is our list of Christmas variety shows that were hosted by celebrities. Some of these are specials created just for Christmas and some are an episode of a variety show that the celebrity already was hosting. They are organized by the celebrity's name with the name of the individual special(s) following. If the celebrity's name is in green, there is a special page dedicated to that celebrity and his or her Christmas variety show(s). For the most part, these Christmas variety shows and specials are not on iTunes yet. We have done our best to track down where you can find and purchase the Christmas variety shows and specials we list below. They will be listed in the side columns.

Christmas Commercials

While Christmas commercials were created to play on the emotions of Christmas to make us want to purchase a product or service, over the years, they have taken on a life of their own and have become something of a time capsule for our past Christmases. They have become Christmas entertainment in their own right. Because many Christmas commercials are different from year to year, they have become something of a time stamp for a specific Christmas or Christmases in the past - a form of nostalgia. Some Christmas commercials have continued on, unaltered, for years or even decades, becoming more than just a Christmas commercial, becoming an old, welcomed friend that makes us smile when it enters the living room. They become dated over time, but, like an old friend, enter our living rooms all the same. Many of these commercials are scattered around our site in the form of our Christmas presents or in our Christmas advent calendar (no peaking, the advent calendar is only for December). However, we have two Christmas commercials below that will take you to two of our Christmas present pages containing a Christmas commercial.
