CA Christmas Events

Are You Looking for Things to do at Christmas Time in California?

If you are in California and you are looking for things to do at Christmas time, the only word you need to know is entertainment. The state that brings us so many of the Christmas films we know and love doesn't disappoint at Christmas time for family entertainment. There are many amusement parks festively decked out for the Christmas season, Christmas shows, historic (Victorian) Christmas events, and Christmas parades (including many Christmas boat parades up and down the coast) among many other Christmas related attractions. California has events that take Christmas a little over the top in the way that you would expect from Hollywood with places like Disneyland and Universal Studios' Grinchmas. Many of us at Ovation for Christmas rather enjoy this kind of immersion in Christmas. Everywhere you look...there's Christmas. Don't get us wrong, we like the subdued, understated, classy Christmases too. But there is just something about the bright colors everywhere you look and that magical feeling you get when you are surrounded by and inundated with Christmas that is special. In some ways it transports us back to childhood and those Christmases long, long ago. In California, Christmas truly is the most wonderful time of the year, only they need some Hollywood magic for the snow.

The Best Christmas Events and Attractions in California

California truly knows how to keep Christmas alive, if any state in the nation possesses the knowledge. The Golden State adds that silvery glint around the holidays so that when you find yourself in CA at Christmas, you may just lose yourself in the magic of Christmas. There are almost too many events to mention, but we will do our best. Ovation for Christmas strives to help you find the best Christmas events and attractions in your state. While these are not in any strict order, we try to put the best Christmas events that we think you may enjoy most or that we think are the most festive near the top. That is not to say there aren't hidden gems lower on the list by any means or there aren't events that you may enjoy more at the bottom of the list. On this page you will find a few of the best Christmas events we have found that the state has to offer.

Christmas at the Disneyland Resort - Los Angeles, CA

What Christmas Events to Expect: A Disney Christmas Experience, A Christmas Amusement Park & a Holiday Themed Fireworks Show Highlight: The "Believe...In Holiday Magic" Nightly Fireworks Show that ends with Falling Snow, and, If You Can Get a Seat, The Candlelight Processional is a CAN'T MISS EVENT!!!

Technically it is called "Holidays at the Disneyland Resort" probably to remain politically correct in not using the word "Christmas" out of fear of alienating or offending people who are not Christians. However, this is a Christmas event and Disneyland knows how to keep the Christmas spirit alive if any theme park around possesses the knowledge. It is the self professed happiest place on earth during the merriest time of the year! There isn't much that needs to be said other than that. As with most outdoor Christmas events, the true magic of Christmas at Disneyland is best experienced after dark when the lights go on. Just walking around Disneyland and looking at the decorations at Christmastime is enough to get most people in the Christmas spirit. For those who need a little more persuasion to get their heart to grow three sizes may we suggest the following:

For those looking for the true meaning of Christmas during the holiday season, we highly recommend the Candlelight Processional at Disneyland, which is now open to the public (although the first 2 days in December are still invitation only). Tickets will be hard to come by for the event, but it is worth it. Here you will hear all of the wonderful Christmas carols pertaining to the true meaning of the season, such as "The First Noel," "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem," "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear,""Joy to the World," etc., that are so rarely played in malls and public places anymore out of fear of alienating or upsetting a handful of close minded individuals who take offense to everything that gives the slightest hint of Christianity.

If you are wondering where the other winter holidays are represented, you should go on the "It's a Small World" ride as it has been transformed for the holidays celebrated in the winter around the world. The Haunted Mansion ride has also been transformed, or rather taken over with Jack Skellington and "The Nightmare Before Christmas." This is a can't miss, but it may take you a while to get in if you don't have a fastpass. You should also make sure to see the daily Christmas Fantasy Parade and the nightly "Believe...In Holiday Magic" fireworks show with falling snow!

The Great Dickens Christmas Fair - San Francisco, CA

What Christmas Events to Expect: A Victorian Christmas Fair, Just as It is Described: A Victorian Christmas Card Come to Life Highlights: Hundreds of Actors Dressed in Victorian Garb Including many Playings Specific Roles as Characters from Dickens' Books (Even Charles Dickens Himself) Creating the Feeling of Being Transported to Another Time and Place, the Victorian, English, and Festive Food and Drinks: Including Roasted Chestnuts, Hot Buttered Rum, Hot Toddies, Hot Siced Mead, Mulled Wine, and Sit Down Christmas Feasts (Make a Reservation), Unique Gifts

It is as if the Victorian England from Charles Dickens novels has been magically trasported to the Bay Area in California along with many of the very characters from those stories and prominent citizens from the time. The Dickens Christmas Fair in CA brings Victorian London to life at Christmas, the way it was documented and immortalized by Charles Dickens. A Christmas Carol is, perhaps, the most beloved of all Christmas stories. It is certainly the most prolific and widely interpreted of all Christmas stories on TV and in film. While it has been retold in many different ways, nothing compares to the purity of the original Dickens novel. Here you can interact with Christmas past in Christmas present and make plans to visit in Christmases yet to come. Charles Dickens couldn't have written the irony better himself.

When you think of all the trimmings of a "traditional" Christmas, much of it was first documented and popularized by Charles Dickens in his novel "A Christmas Carol." Here you can almost live it, interact with the origins or rather the popularization of so many of the Christmas Traditions we love today and many that are known but sadly are not practiced much anymore. This is the perfect event to discover or rediscover a new Christmas Tradition for your family, even if it is just coming back to The Great Dickens Christmas Fair next year.
